Accessibility Plans in Nova Scotia
Collaboration is key to meeting our goal of an accessible Nova Scotia. Organizations around the province have a vital role in working toward accessibility.
The Accessibility Act requires some organizations (called prescribed public sector bodies) to establish an accessibility advisory committee and develop an accessibility plan.
Prescribed public sector bodies are prescribed in two groups:
- There are 90 PPSBs in the first group. They include 70 municipalities, 11 post-secondary institutions, and 9 public libraries. Their first accessibility plans were due April 1, 2022.
- There are 17 PPSBs in the second group. They include the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority, the Regional Centres for Education, Conseil scolaire acadien provincial, Events East, the IWK Health Centre, Nova Scotia Health, the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation, Build Nova Scotia, Invest Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Museum. Their first accessibility plans are due April 1, 2023.
Accessibility plans must show progress made preventing and removing barriers, how organizations will prevent and remove barriers, and the processes in place to access the impact of proposed actions on accessibility.
Accessibility plans must also be made available to the public (by posting their plans to their websites), and be updated every three years.
